Sail School 2009 began idyllically on Saturday, September 5, the first day of Tasmanian school holidays.

As the sun shone down on Hobart and a snow-capped Mount Wellington, 130 excited youngsters and their parents gathered at 10 am on the Derwent Sailing Squadron lawns at Sandy Bay for the four-day event.

With 6 races of the 10 race series complete, the results to date have now been published.  As you will see from the tables below, not only are a lot of the series very close, but some have been turned on their head.

The last winter race was held in very light conditions proving to be a challenge for sailors and the committee. The frustration due to no wind was offset by the luxury start boat that has recently been completed. Congratulations to Scott Price and his family on their recent launching of the "Ark of Esperance".

Tasmanian Laser sailors from Dinghy Group are showing good form in first two races of the 2009 2009 Queensland Youth Week incorporating the Australian Midwinter Youth Championships.

In the radial section 4 sailors rounded the top mark of race 1 in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th indicating the fruits of their intensive training program are paying dividends.

The Dinghy Group's 2009 Winter Racing Program starts on Sunday 24th May with two back to back races starting at 1000 (time of 1st warning signal).

The Sailing Instructions are available for download under the events calendar and entry forms (and money collector!) will be available on the morning of each race from 0830.

After making their mothers breakfast in bed a fleet of Sabot sailors arrived at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania for the second round of winter training.

Training for the 22 sabots again was a picture perfect. For those that think its cold here in Tasmania, take a look at the pictures and think again.

The 2009 Dinghy Group prize night was held last friday night and hosted this year by the Derwent Sailing Squadron. The number of individuals collecting prizes highlights the additional depth we now have in the classes as well as divisions within classes.

The Dinghy Group have seen a fantastic increase in the participation of junior sailors leading into winter. This is due to the fantastic efforts of Richard Scarr in motivating kids to see sailing as an all year round sport.

Last weekend saw fantastic conditions with a light 10 knot south easter in the morning tending more south west in the afternoon and increasing in strength as racing began.

The annual combined club and Camp Quality picnic was held on Sunday the 15th Feb at Richardsons beach and was a tremendous success despite somewhat less than summer weather. Danny Cole must be congratulated once again for delivering the cricket gear, BBQ equipment and enough food and drinks for everyone to the beach before everyone arrived.
